How does the Respiratory System correlate with the other body systems?

Digestive System

Both, the digestive and respiratory system depend on eachother.

The digestive system depends on the respiratory system because the digestive system functions by using muscular contractions to break down food and move it along the system. These muscles depend upon oxygen in order to function. Without oxygen the digestive system wouldn't be able to operate (How Do the Digestive & Respiratory Systems Work Together?).

Similarly, the respiratory system wouldn't be able to function without the elements of the digestive system.

Although, the process of exhalation is passive and doesn't require muscular contraction, an individual contracts the respiratory muscles in order to inhale. The respiratory muscles need fuel that consist of carbohydrates and fat in order to contract and that is when the digestive system comes into play. The digestive system has the ability to provide the muscle cells with carbohydrates and fat. Without the digestive system an individual wouldn't have the ability to inhale (How Do the Digestive & Respiratory Systems Work Together?).

Circulatory System

When an individual breathes, the respiratory system recieves fresh oxygen. The oxygen first goes into the lungs then makes its way to the left side of the heart. It is then pumped by the heart into the bloodstream.

The heart has the ability to pump blood through a system of large and small pathways that make up the circulatory system (The Circulatory and Respiratory System).

Blood gives nutrients and oxygen to each cell in an individual. Once in the cells, oxygen begins to burn nutrients in order to create energy. During this process, carbon dioxide produces.

The blood carries carbon dioxide into the right side of the heart, from which it is pumped to the lungs and when an individual exhales the carbon dioxide exits the body through the lungs (The Circulatory and Respiratory System).
